2019’s Winning Racewear Trends
With racing season right around the corner, it’s time to get your plans in order. Chosen a venue and made a booking? Fabulous. Next comes the question of what to wear.
With so many options, choosing a race day look can feel a tad overwhelming. To make life a little easier, we’ve pulled together a racewear cheat sheet, with fashion tips courtesy of super-star stylist, Sara Smith. Find out what’s in, what’s out, and how to make a splash this season.
What are some top racewear trends for 2019?
As always, it depends which event you are attending, but I’d say the key is to stand out from the crowd and have fun with your styling. Melbourne Cup is the Oscars of the racing calendar, so my suggestion would be to embrace colour and high-end design. Zimmermann is a great go-to for head to toe print – think amazing statement floral dresses paired with thigh high boots – guaranteed to take a place on the podium. When it comes to Derby Day, I’d colour block with monochrome for a minimalist take. Bianca Spender has done a slick collection of mix-and-match black and white which will really go the distance – you’ll wear them time and time again. For a fun spin on the same trend, check out Sass and Bide for edgy stripes in luxe silks. And if dresses aren’t your thing, channel Bianca Jagger and look for gorgeous short-suits or tuxedos – or invest in a fabulous tailored jumpsuit to wear with slick hair and a sexy red lip.
What about headwear – what’s in this year?
The headband is trending at the moment and is a fashion-conscious youthful take – just make sure to co-ordinate the colour with your outfit. If budget allows, milliners such as Neil Grigg can design and make the perfect shape and style of hat to compliment your dress.
On a budget? Look out for gorgeous, intricate hair pins and clips and layer them for maximum effect.
What kind of accessories will we be seeing?
Earrings are a big statement right now and can give the simplest of looks a unique spin. Pierre Winter Fine has an incredible selection of statement costume jewels, from brands such as Oscar De La Renta. Gorgeous.
Mini bags are also trending and are super cute and of-the-moment – just make sure you can squeeze your essentials in!
What about what NOT to wear? Is there anything you’d steer clear of?
Cheap, shiny fabrics and super short lengths. Instead, opt for more demure, catwalk-inspired styles.
What are the top hair and makeup trends?
For a femme take, opt for natural, glowing skin and earthy tones. Avoid the Kardashian arch and keep it modern with a natural, groomed, fluffy brow, and add some gold metallic eyeshadow and a peachy-pink lip for soft definition.
If you’re wearing a statement hat, keep the face simple with minimal eye make-up and instead stand out with a bold lip color – fuchsia pinks, reds and orange-reds are all winners. LiqLips has a fantastic selection that has amazing staying power – perfect for eating and drinking!
How about the boys?
When it comes to men’s styling, my number one suggestion is to choose a fit and cut of suit that suits your body shape – there’s nothing less attractive than a man who looks like he’s wearing his dads ill-fitting suit! Stores such as Calibre specialise in mens’ trends and body shapes, so make sure to utilise the staff and let them take some of the stress out of it. Ask them to guide you regarding hem length and jacket fit, and get your suit tailored – it makes a world of difference! Fun accessories for men are very of-the-moment – look out for colourful ties, stylish tie pins, pocket squares and lapel brooches to bring together your look (co-ordinate these with your shirt and suit combo). Brogue and derby styles are the go when it comes to shoes. You’ve got this!
